November 2024

During October we were very busy in 5th and 6th class. In Maths we studied multiplication, 2D shapes and lines and angles. In Irish we were learning about the theme of “Bia” we even made biachlár;s for our own restaurant.  We loved deciding what items should feature on our menus and how much each item should cost. In English we started the novel “Holes” by Louis Sachar. We are all thoroughly enjoying reading about life at Camp Green Lake and can’t wait to read on and find out the fate of Stanley Yelnats. In science we have been learning about renewable and non-renewable energy sources. We learned about the benefits of renewable energy and completed a project based on renewable energy sources. In groups we designed renewable energy villages which featured solar power, wind turbines and hydroelectric power. We even made our wind turbines move by connecting them to a battery. We had lots of fun completing this project!

During October we also had Maths Week, one of our favourite weeks of the year! Everyday we had to try and solve the “Puzzle of the Day”, some days the puzzle was tricky but we enjoyed the challenge. We put our problem solving skills to the test with some “Computational Thinking” stations, these puzzles really made us think outside the box. Our class also became mini teachers one day as we split up and helped the younger classes with maths stations. Helping the younger students is always fun. Maths Week ended with our class joining up with third and fourth class for a maths quiz on Kahoot.

Our boys and girls Rackard League teams enjoyed success as they both won their District Finals! Both teams made it through to the county semi-finals. The boys were unfortunate and lost out but our girls team were victorious and we have a Rackard League county final to look forward to when we come back after midterm.
