September 2024
September was busy in Third and Fourth Class as we got back into our school routine. For Third Class, we made the move next door to a new classroom where they were welcomed and shown around by Fourth Class.
We started learning about the Normans towards the end of the month, and beforehand, we researched the history of our names. Many of us were surprised to see that our names linked back to the arrival of the Normans in Wexford in 1169. We completed projects on our findings which we hung in our classroom.
When we started learning about the Normans, we already knew how to recognise some names of Norman origin, of which there are lots in our area.
We started reading groups this month and we are enjoying reading some new pages in our books each day. We are reading, ‘The Blunders’, ‘Dog Man’ and ‘The World’s Worst Teachers’ in our groups.
In English, we looked at recount writing this month. We also focused on writing letters and wrote letters to children in different countries telling them about life in Gusserane. We also learned some new poems this month. We learned, ‘Welcome back to School’, ‘Mo Chaitín’ and ‘My Dog likes to Disco’.
We started learning the tin whistle in September and we are making such good progress so far. We have learned all of the notes and are practising playing tunes each day. There is great excitement in our class when the tin whistles come out and we look forward to sharing some tunes with our friends and families as the year goes on!
