December 2023
1st and Second Class had a very busy December as we prepared for a big performance of ‘The Christmas Quarrel’. Boys and girls worked incredibly hard to learn their lines, stage blocking and songs to perform in our wonderful Christmas play. We performed a matinee and evening show, and the children really did themselves proud! There was no stage fright or nerves as each child said their lines clearly and confidently out to their parents and friends who were watching in the audience.
We had a quick turnaround for our Carol service in the church. Children in 1st and 2nd had another late night of acting and singing as they took part in the choir and the Nativity with the rest of the school the following week. Everyone did a fantastic job at telling the story of the birth of the baby Jesus in Bethlehem.
A very important lesson in December was about Advent. We learned about how a candle is lit in the church each Sunday before Christmas, what each candle represents, and then we created our very own Advent wreaths.
We wrapped up our gymnastics lessons with some very fun partner poses and even a go on the tumble track! Boys and girls in 1st and 2nd learned to counterbalance to support each other and everyone had a great time! The progress that has been made in a short time in flexibility, body awareness and gymnastic ability has been remarkable, and we will look forward to more lessons next year!
In between the excitement and rehearsals, we got some academic work done too! In maths this month we learned a lot about place value, tens and units and used unifix cubes to help us understand! We found out about games and toys in the past in history. We tried our hand at a few different games like hopscotch and marbles and enjoyed the research into how our parents and grandparents played without screens and internet.
We finished off the month with a party with delicious hot food in the hall courtesy of the Parent’s Association. There was great excitement when Santa came to see the children of Gusserane NS. He listened to what all the boys and girls wanted and even joined in at the disco for a bit! All the children were looking forward to their Christmas holidays and were ready for a break after a very busy December in school!
