February 2023
We marked the beginning of February, and the start of Spring, by celebrating St Brigid’s day. We joined in a live webinar with children’s author Caroline Busher and learned about St Brigid’s life and the customs and traditions associated with her. We also created out own St Brigid’s crosses using pipe cleaners.
We started maths stations two times per week with Ms Walsh. We have enjoyed practicing our problem-solving skills and being challenged with puzzles. During February we have been learning about long multiplication, fractions, and division.
The 7th of February was Safer Internet Day. We discussed all the different ways we use the internet on a daily basis and how our lives would be different if the internet did not exist. We leaned about ways in which we can stay safe on the internet and what do if something happens online that makes us feel uncomfortable or unsafe. Finally we designed our own posters to promote internet safety. The posters are hanging proudly in our classroom.
In history this month we have started learning all about The Vikings. So far we have learned about who the Vikings were, where they came from, their homes, their clothes and their diet. We will continue learning about the Vikings into March. We are working together in small groups to carry out research for a project on the Vikings. When we have finished our research, we will present our projects on A2 sheets of paper. We look forward to seeing the finished product!
The Vikings were our inspiration for art during the month of February also. We collected recycled milk/juice cartons to create our own Viking longships. Ms Boyle cut each carton in half, and we then painted the carton brown. We designed our own sails and shields for our ships and attached them to the carton. We attached a dragon head to the front and a dragon tail to the back of our ships. We were so pleased with the finished products!
We had our final two sessions with artist Sarah Bowie during February. We finished writing our stories and drawing the illustrations in our comic books. We were delighted with the finished products and loved looking at our friend’s comic books too!
We were sad to say goodbye to Amanda this month as we had our final yoga session. We enjoyed practicing our yoga poses and break work each week. We have now started dance lessons with Anne Marie. We have learned a group dance to the song “Sunroof” by Nicky Youre. We love the games we play at the end of each session, musical statues is our favourite!
