January 2023

January 2023

It was great to welcome back all of the boys and girls after the Christmas holidays. The children were so excited to share all of their news when they returned!

Clothes was our topic in the Infant Room for the month of January. We discussed the types of clothes we wear during the Winter and we also discussed the different types of weather. We also looked at clothes that our grandparents wore long ago. The children observed some older pictures which showed us the clothes worn by children long ago compared to now.

January was Artist Appreciation Month in school. Before we started painting, we looked at the 3 primary colours and we had the opportunity to mix them together to create new colours. The children did a great job on their colour wheels! After this, we focused on the artist Van Gogh. We completed some lovely paintings of ‘Sunflowers’ and we also completed the picture ‘Starry Night’ using chalk pastels.

We were delighted to welcome Ms. Walsh back into our classroom this term for Maths stations. The Senior Infants were busy focusing on oral word problems and writing sums, and the Junior Infants were busy working on counting and number formation.

We were very busy covering lots of different topics in Literacy. The Infants have been exploring the narrative genre. We focused on the story of Little Red Riding Hood, where we discussed the characters, setting, problem and solution. The Junior Infants were busy learning their initial sounds in phonics. We started to blend the sounds that we have learned together to read new words. They were busy learning how to form their letters correctly. The Senior Infants were learning their consonant diagraphs this month, as well as working hard on writing their capital letters correctly.

For Irish lessons this month, we focused on the topics ‘Lá fliuch’ and ‘Sa Chistin’. The children loved learning the poem ‘Lá fliuch’ and did a great job reciting it on their own and in groups!

We were thrilled to have Amanda return for Yoga this month. Amanda is showing us lots of different yoga poses and shows us how to relax at the end of each session. In PE we were focusing on the Games strand of the curriculum.

We are looking forward to a fun filled February. We will be focusing on Fairy tales and the Puppet Theatre through play and we are also looking forward to welcoming Anne Mare Cooney back for Dance lessons!
