January 2023
]Ms. Hanrahan and the 1st and 2nd class students kicked off January setting some goals and making some New Year’s resolutions. We chose some small things to aim for in 2023, such as making sure no one is left out, eating more fruit and vegetables, and improving soccer and GAA skills.
We celebrated the Chinese New Year and welcomed the ‘Year of the Rabbit’ by learning about the country China in geography. We learned they have some interesting traditions to celebrate, such as getting their hair cut to represent a fresh start and painting their doors red as a sign of good luck!
This month we found out about the artist Vincent Van Gogh. We enjoyed looking at his beautiful art, particularly ‘Starry Night’, which we used as inspiration for our painting lesson. The class loved mixing shades of blue to paint the night sky and using white to represent the wind.
We also created ‘Pinch Pot Pets’ using clay alongside our reports on animals for English. Each boy and girl chose an animal to create, they sculpted the shape using clay and added ears, eyes, a nose and a mouth to create the finished product. They then wrote about the animal, detailing what they eat, where they live and what they look like along with an interesting fact!
The children in first and second were delighted to be learning about the planets and space travel. They were engrossed by the subject and learned a mnemonic to remember the order of the planets from the sun: ‘My Very Excellent Monkey Just Served Unicorn Noodles’.
We had a great start to the year and are looking forward to the rest of 2023!
