January 2024

January 2024

First and Second Class started 2024 off by learning about new year’s resolutions and deciding what they would do more and less of for the upcoming year. They thought long and hard before deciding on their own personal goals for the year. We made some hot air balloons displaying these resolutions and we also celebrated the new year with some fun on the tablets. The children coloured in some fireworks and were able to watch them shoot up into the sky using augmented reality! It was amazing to watch their work come to life.

In geography, we completed a country study on Mexico. The boys and girls researched Mexico in pairs using Kiddle to find the answer to questions about population, capital cities and national foods and animals. They found out some key information and some interesting facts, too. We put what we learned together to make fabulous projects including the information that each student found most interesting. They really loved making the projects their own and showing the information in different ways.

To complete our learning on Mexico, we wrote reports in English on Axolotls, an animal found only in Mexico! We used Mexico and Dia de Los Muertos as inspiration for art, too- first and second class made fabulous sugar skulls with colourful patterns and flowers!

We learned about magnetism in science and completed many investigations to find out what materials were magnetic. We found out about the different poles on a magnet and investigated the magnetic field of a magnet and if it were attracted to different metals through a variety of different objects. The boys and girls couldn’t believe that their magnets were attracted to a paperclip through something as thick as their table!

In January we were very lucky to have rugby coach Katie come to Gusserane N.S. to coach boys and girls in tag rugby. We have had a ball learning about some of the rules of rugby and playing rugby games. Tadhg Furlong could have some stiff competition in the future!

In January we celebrated Catholic schools week. A favourite activity we completed in class was showing how we can ‘love our neighbour as yourself’. We drew pictures showing how we can treat others with kindness and be helpful to one another. Each child thought of a great example of when this had happened in their own lives.

We are all very excited to see what else is in store for us in 2024.
