November 2022

1st and 2nd Class were kept very busy for the month of November after a nice relaxing mid-term break.

We learned all about the genre of procedural writing in English. We used our bossy verbs and looked at lots of instructions and recipes. Of course, we had to try a few out too! The children became chefs for a day and made and decorated some delicious rice krispie buns. We also followed a recipe to make some soft and squishy play dough which we got to bring home.

As the weather got colder, we found out that autumn was over and winter was here. In SESE we learned about the hibernation of animals and migration of birds as well as lots more.

We learned about blending using paint in art and created fabulous sunset backdrops to our winter penguin art. Each penguin turned out differently and that made them even more special.

In maths, one topic we covered was capacity. The class loved investigating with water and discovering objects that were more or less than a litre, 500ml and 250ml. We found out how much an eggcup, a kettle, a basin and a cup could hold and we had a great time doing it.

November also brought the start of gymnastic lessons for the boys and girls in Gusserane N.S.. Gymstars gymnastic club coaches came to the delight and excitement of the children. The children learn body awareness and develop strength, agility and a sense of achievement as they try different skills such as forward rolls and headstands.

Science week was a huge success for first and second class. The children absolutely loved answering the science question of the day, doing experiments and STEM challenges. A few of their favourites were making lava lamps, experimenting with diet coke and mentos and testing their taste buds with sweet, sour and salty flavours. The future is bright for science in Gusserane!
