November 2023

November 2023

November got off to a great start as children returned to school after their mid term break full of stories of trick or treating, Halloween parties and sweets.

Science week took place during November, and it was a hit with 1st and 2nd Class. Children were so excited to do different science experiments and STEM challenges in the classroom. We made a skittles rainbow, inflated a balloon using baking soda and vinegar, separated salt and pepper using static electricity and more. I think the consensus is that we need to do more experiments! They were challenged to make a 3d structure of their own name out of different materials. The boys and girls in First and Second Class had great success and I was very impressed with the results.

In maths this month we looked into 2D shapes, we found different 2D shapes all around the classroom and the yard in a shape search. We created 2D shape monster, too. The boys and girls were very creative with their ideas!

We started gymnastics in November with coached Kevin and Tommy, and so far the children have been challenged to do forward rolls, cartwheels and handstands as their main skills. They stretch and practice different skills each week alongside some fun games. The progress they have made is fantastic!

In geography, we have been learning about the season of winter and for art we have created fantastic winter cityscapes with the sky inspired by the artist Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Nights’.

Procedural writing is our genre topic this month and it is safe to say it is a firm favourite! We looked at different experiment instructions before completing them. We then had a closer look at different recipes and found a fantastic recipe for Marshmallow hats! Of course, we had to try them out in the classroom and we spent a very enjoyable evening following the recipe, taste testing and then rewriting it in our own words. I was very proud of their fantastic writing.

These are just a few of the fun and interesting things that we have done this month. I hope enjoyed hearing about them!
