October 2022
The Infant Classroom were very busy during the month of October. The themes we were working on for October were Autumn and Halloween.
For our topic of Autumn, we discussed and observed the changes we see in Autumn. The children learned about the different colours, leaves, fruit, seeds and animals associated with Autumn time. We learned that the leaves begin to fall off the trees in Autumn. We completed lots of nice Autumn art. We painted leaves and used crepe paper to create some squirrels. The children brought in some lovely Autumn leaves and seeds for display in our classroom as part of SESE.
The Infants enjoyed their fine motor stations with Ms. Walsh. The Junior Infants were busy practising patterns and mark making to develop our early writing skills and the Senior Infants were practising their letter formations. We also learned how to hold a scissors properly and how to cut. Some of the topics we covered in maths included number and 2D shapes.
Our focus for PE during October was the games strand of the curriculum. We were doing lots of work on our throwing and catching skills using beanbags. We have been learning to throw at a target, throw and catch in the air using one/both hands. We were also learning how important it is to listen and work as part of a team when playing games.
Our theme for the last 2 weeks of October was Halloween. We had great fun making potions and writing our own recipes in the Witches Den play area. The children were adding lots of ingredients to their potions such as eyeballs and spiders! We were using our construction materials to make haunted houses and used our small world area to act out Halloween scenes using our spooky Halloween characters. Some of the art we completed included painting paper plate pumpkins, practising our cutting and sticking skills to make bats and we decorated our very own Halloween masks! We enjoyed singing the songs ‘Oíche Shamhna’ and ‘The Halloween Song’. We learned lots of new Halloween vocabulary in Irish. Everyone in our class dressed up as spooky Halloween characters on the day of our holidays. Some of the fun Halloween activities we took part in included a Halloween quiz alongside first and second class, a Halloween scavenger hunt and a whole school Halloween disco!
Next month, we will be taking part in Literacy Lift Off Stations in class until Christmas. We are also really looking forward to starting the gymnastics strand of the PE curriculum!
