September 2022
September has been an exciting month for First and Second class as they settled into new routines with different classmates. We were very lucky to have two new students join our class and we all had fun getting to know each other and making friends!
Throughout the month, the class participated in a variety of different activities. These included literacy groups, STEM activities, autumn nature walks, science investigations and hot air balloon construction to name a few!
We have started off our mornings with Literacy and Maths groups for the month of September and it has been fantastic to see the children engaging with their learning of reading, phonics, grammar and problem solving through a variety of different games, ICT, small group work and individualised instruction. The class have been enjoying reading new books each week and using the skill of visualising to imagine what’s happening in the story in their heads.
First and Second class explored the topic of transport at the beginning of the month. The children learned about the different ways we can travel by land, by air and by sea. We created our very own 3d hot air balloons in art with each child as a passenger in their balloons!
STEM challenges have been a favourite in our classroom, and we saw some strong competitive streaks being brought out when the class were tasked with building the tallest structure in their groups, using only spaghetti and marshmallows. Teamwork and resilience were built as structures grew and toppled around them.
First class were very excited to be initiated into some new activities this year. They got the opportunity to apply for the Amber Flag and the Active schools’ committees and have their voices heard. We have also joined the school choir and spent a few enjoyable afternoons learning new songs and developing our singing abilities with the help of Ms. Foxe and the older classes. We sang proudly for the mass to celebrate the beginning of the school year.
First and Second class have also been learning all about the season of autumn. We have completed nature walks to collect autumn leaves and spot different signs of autumn. Our nature table has been a great way to display some of the signs of autumn that we have found.
We are looking forward to another busy month in October and can’t wait to learn new things and explore different subject areas.
